Soy Naxi Lopez Puente y hoy estamos con nuestra reportera Anayancy Ulloa. Anayancy. Bienvenida.

ANAYANCY ULLOA: Muchas gracias. Buenas tardes.

NAXI LOPEZ: Para vender.

ANAYANCY ULLOA: Exactamente. You imagine that you’re going to arrive and that you’re going to hear that the atmosphere will be ugly, that there will be complaints or that there will be shouting. That there will be angry people, that there will be signs, who knows what.

And the truth is that you arrive and it’s an organization that they have super organized, everyone calm, they feel secure. I believe from the support they are receiving in this case from their legal representative. So I tell you, you didn’t see a single one complaining.

NAXI LOPEZ: Hello and welcome to this episode of the Business Journal Podcast. I’m Naxi Lopez Puente and today we are here with our reporter Anayancy Ulloa. Anayancy, welcome.

ANAYANCY ULLOA: Thank you very much. Good afternoon.

NAXI LOPEZ: Good afternoon. Anayancy is our reporter who covers everything related to Reynosa, Matamoros, Mexico, which is a super important beat for us, because obviously we live in a region that functions as binational, it is a binational region, so welcome. I want you to tell us a little about yourself, tell us where you come from, what your background is.

ANAYANCY ULLOA: Okay. Thank you very much, everyone. I’m Anayancy Ulloa, I’m from Reynosa. I didn’t start in journalism. I studied Communication Sciences, but I didn’t study journalism. I focused in my first job on communication and public relations at a local private university in Reynosa. There I worked for almost 16 years, organizing events, carrying out marketing, advertising, promoting degree programs for future generations who were going to pursue a university career.

So I got involved in all of that, organizing events, everything internally within the institution. It was a very nice stage, a lot of knowledge, a lot of dynamism. After that, I was invited to participate in Mexico Industry, a magazine that had already been in Reynosa for several years, whose focus was exclusively the maquiladora industry and all the stakeholders who participate so that this sector can move forward — economic development, business organizations, everything that is happening in the industry — but from the positive side.

We never focused on publishing negative things. Despite the environment, so challenging that it was many years ago and that sometimes unfortunately continues to be in Reynosa, we always focused on telling the good stories, those cases of success. The people are what make the companies, and that’s not my slogan, it’s the slogan of many maquiladora plant managers I have had the opportunity to meet and speak with.

So interviewing these people who give life to the industry and that you cannot believe all the years they dedicate to the industry, and in a family it’s not just one person. There are companies where you find the wife and the husband and their descendants, their children or nephews or grandchildren.

So in the maquiladora industry you find stories so beautiful like that the whole family is working there and that’s where they build their life. So it was also a very, very beautiful stage of getting to know all of this, of sharing all the growth, all the economic development, not created by me obviously but by the parties involved.

Economic developments both in Reynosa and at a binational level with McAllen, with Mission, with Pharr, all the developments, all the infrastructure that was going to arrive for Reynosa, Matamoros or Tamaulipas itself that could trigger this growth, it was very nice, it was very nice to know it, and they continue to be very attractive things for me, to know what exists, what is there, and now here with the Rio Grande Valley Business Journal we hope to do a good job, a good performance, and to share interesting stories.

NAXI LOPEZ: And you are doing that. I want you to tell our audience what it has been like for you, because as you say, you came with a marketing focus, very connected, knowing a lot about the industry, knowing a lot about maquila. Tell us what it has been like to refocus your work and ask those questions that are not always easy. Tell us about that part.

ANAYANCY ULLOA: It could be called uncomfortable, different, not so uncomfortable, but different, because as I was telling you, I always highlighted the beautiful things, what companies do in Reynosa, or knowing that a maquiladora in Reynosa makes televisions, or another maquiladora made blenders, or another made vacuum cleaners, blinds, and that all of that arrives here to the market and that we ourselves consume it.

But now, when I started to get involved with the Rio Grande Valley Business Journal, it’s about going further. It’s not just showing the beautiful side, but what is really happening. For example, before I didn’t cover topics like what is happening right now with the farmers, or with some of the blockades by truck drivers. It was getting closer to them and sharing maybe something that is not going to be liked.

Because it’s not a favorable situation, it’s not something nice that is happening, logically. And seeing and listening to the testimonies, for example in this case of the farmers with what they are suffering, and how they shared stories of farmers already in the fourth generation who have 40 years or their entire legacy dedicated to that, and seeing for the first time that this situation is happening where they don’t have water, where they are suffering from rising costs of grains or that there is a lot of volatility in costs, for example everything for the truck drivers. There are many challenges they are facing.

But I think they are very noble sectors, they are very strong because they continue and they do not give up. So it’s something different, but I’m starting to like getting to know more, to know what is behind everything beautiful that I think not only in the maquiladora industry, nor in the case of farmers or truck drivers. Any sector, any city, any state, any country can be living this. I think it is resilience, the capacity and desire to move forward that has kept them standing.

NAXI LOPEZ: Of course, and as you say, it’s a super important industry for us and it provides a lot of employment, not only in Mexico but in the United States, because the parts that are made there arrive here and then sometimes they go back again in the product. So there is a lot of exchange, and right now we are living in a moment where, for example tariffs, there is a lot of change, starting with COVID which kind of moved the whole system, and then politics, not only politics of the United States. We are also covering politics in Mexico because for us what you do in Mexico affects what is done in the United States and vice versa, they cannot disconnect. So having someone like you on our team who knows the industry, knows the laws, knows the sectors, benefits us greatly.

So that’s why it’s very important that our audience knows you, because you are a very important part of everything that is business here in our region.

ANAYANCY ULLOA: Thank you very much and we try to cover the most relevant news. As you mention, every beginning of the year is challenging, and I’m not the one saying it, the experts I speak with say it — developers of industrial parks, builders, the secretaries of economic development. January and February are always challenging, a readjustment, even more now with everything related to tariffs and the impact that logically has on foreign trade, which is an area of daily adjustments, daily updates, daily challenges that they have to adapt to so that this does not stop, because you cannot stop.

Yesterday I had to go take a photograph at a maquiladora in Parque Colonial, near the Pharr bridge. Yesterday nationwide there was a failure in the customs system in Mexico, and there were an infinite number of trailers, an infinite number of trailers lined up. So something that happens here in Mexico logically will impact the maquiladora industry and will impact commerce to deliver the final product here to the United States and to all the distribution centers that exist.

So as you say, it’s binational. Mexico depends on the United States, the United States depends on Mexico. There is a very strong synergy. Despite adverse situations or challenges that we might not know, everyone involved is strong and has the capacity to stay steady and adapt to any change, any situation that is happening.

NAXI LOPEZ: And that is what we are seeing. What is happening right now in the maquiladora industry? Obviously in Matamoros the situation is a little different from Reynosa. Reynosa has had a lot of movement, a lot of growth, and Matamoros not as much as Reynosa. And right now unfortunately, as you have reported, there are more than 1,300 employees in Matamoros who just lost their jobs because of bankruptcy and fraud. Tell us what you are seeing when it comes to the maquiladora industry in Matamoros and in Reynosa.

ANAYANCY ULLOA: In Reynosa the maquiladora industry has never stopped having movement. Even if people say companies are going to start leaving because of this or that or tariffs, it’s not true. You start to go through the companies, you start to talk with the main actors, HR managers, those in charge of foreign trade, finance, the maquiladora association. Yes, there will always be ups and downs, but that is every year. In any sector there are readjustments. Crises are opportunities to readjust, to start learning to do things differently but with the same results or sometimes even better results.

Last year before joining here I visited different industrial parks and you could hear that companies were supposedly going to close, but you passed through the parks and saw many constructions. Three weeks ago I went again to an industrial park with strong maquiladora presence in Reynosa and I saw one company opening vacancies and there were more than 150 people lined up for a job opening. More than 150 people there applying, and everyone wants to work, everyone is looking.

A mother and daughter were applying at the same company at the same time because they want to move forward. The mother had more than ten years without working, and necessity was pushing her to seek employment in the maquiladora industry. The industry offers many jobs. I do not ignore adverse situations like in Matamoros where more than 1,300 families lost income.

But what caught my attention when I had the opportunity to speak with the employees outside Tridonex was their composure, their calm. You imagine you’re going to arrive and hear that the atmosphere will be ugly, that there will be complaints, shouting, angry people, signs. And you arrive and it is an organization that they have super organized. Everyone calm, keeping daily records because they are standing guard in hourly shifts each day.

You didn’t see a single one complaining. I even asked them, didn’t it bother you? Just to see their reaction. No, everything is calm. Yes, it’s sad because we lost our job, and there are years we have here in the company — three years, five years, 15 years, 20 years. There were people with more than 20 years who were six months away from retirement and that remained in limbo. And you ask them, do you have a plan B? One delegate told me that one day before the fraud became known he had just used his bonus to pay his children’s tuition and he was left blank. And you see him there calm, supporting, organizing groups, supporting his coworkers. Everyone lost, all equally.

Some are considering option B, like starting a music group because they like music. Others bring snacks to sell to support themselves during the eight-hour shifts. They are guarding so that the company does not remove any equipment, no machines, no pallets, nothing. Even third parties like suppliers are affected because they cannot retrieve their equipment. The municipal government of Matamoros supported them with tents, with food, with water.

They fear that if machinery is removed, there will be nothing left of value for them, because their savings, their bonuses, everything went there. When I first went they had already been there two weeks and were receiving only a percentage of their salary. Despite everything, the calm, the serenity, the security they have to remain standing is admirable.

NAXI LOPEZ: When we first started hearing about this, sometimes it’s a challenge to get information from official sources when the news does not look good. Tell us about that process. At first you were told nothing was happening, no closure. As reporters sometimes we are not told the truth and we have to dig deeper. Tell us about that.

There is always another side. Institutions promote the advantages and strengths of each city. When something bad is happening, the message is that nothing is wrong. So I had to look for direct sources, employees. I searched social media, profiles, trying to verify who was actually from the plant. Finally I found two employees who asked that I not publish their names. One was a union delegate. They kept me updated constantly.

I also contacted the union’s legal representative, attorney Susana Prieto, through Facebook. I thought she would not respond, but she did. She granted a phone interview, giving her version and explaining the process. There are always opposing opinions, but what I can attest to is that the employees trust her 100 percent. They respect her and admire her. The strike process was expected to begin on the 19th but was moved to the 24th. Meanwhile employees continue standing guard outside Tridonex in Matamoros. We hope other companies open their doors to give employment to so many people who were left without work, including people around 60 years old for whom it is not easy to find employment in Mexico.

NAXI LOPEZ: Anayancy, for my part it has been a pleasure to see you grow, to develop, to help you move from marketing to journalism. Thank you for all your effort. It is very important for us to have you, to have that finger on the pulse of Mexico. Is there something you would like to say that I didn’t ask?

I am grateful for this opportunity. After 16 years in my first role, I thought I would not dedicate myself to journalism anymore. When I studied communication, I never imagined I would dedicate myself to journalism. But life turns and here we are. It is very satisfying to know so many stories and to share them, because many people do not know what happens in Reynosa, that televisions are made there, that auto parts are made there, that radios are made there, that in Matamoros wind turbine blades are made that measure more than 117 meters each. It is very satisfying to share all that and especially what is behind how it is done, what is being done to recover commerce in the historic downtown, to revive tourism. There are many projects underway, many initiatives, much interest from the local governments of Reynosa and Matamoros so that this becomes a boom again.

NAXI LOPEZ: Anayancy, for my part it has been a pleasure to see you grow, to develop, to help you move from marketing to journalism. So I thank you for all your effort, for everything you do. It is very important for us, as I told the audience, to have you, to have that finger on the pulse.

ANAYANCY ULLOA: On the sore spot, or rather.

NAXI LOPEZ: To know what Mexico is. So is there something you would like to say that I maybe didn’t ask you?

ANAYANCY ULLOA: I am grateful for this opportunity. After 16 years in the first media outlet where I was, I truly stepped away thinking that I would no longer dedicate myself to journalism. It was not something that—when I studied, even though I studied Communication, I did not think I would dedicate myself to journalism. Never, never. But look at the turns life takes and God says, you know what, it’s there. So yes, it is very satisfying to know so many stories and to be able to share them, because many people do not know what happens in Reynosa. Many people do not know, for example, going back a little to the maquiladoras, that in Reynosa televisions are made, that in Reynosa parts for automobiles are made, that radios are made, that in Matamoros wind turbine blades are made that measure more than 117 meters each. So it is very satisfying to share all that and especially now, what is behind how it is done, what is being done right now in Reynosa to recover the commerce sector in its historic downtown, to give Reynosa new life, to recover tourism. So there are many projects underway, many initiatives, a lot of interest from the local government of Reynosa and also of Matamoros so that this becomes a boom again.

NAXI LOPEZ: Well, thank you very much, Anayancy, for being with us.
