I\u2019m Naxi Lopez-Puente, and today we have Ronnie Larralde from the Edinburg Chamber of Commerce. Ronnie, welcome.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RONNIE LARRALDE:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Thank you for having me.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>NAXI LOPEZ-PUENTE:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Of course. Ronnie, talk to us about the chamber. What\u2019s its mission? What\u2019s going on there?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RONNIE LARRALDE:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> The Edinburg Chamber is an amazing organization. We\u2019re celebrating our 100th year anniversary this year, so definitely an organization that\u2019s been around a long time and has been led by local business leaders.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If you ever get the opportunity to visit the chamber, you\u2019ll see all the presidents from the last 100 years. The mission is very simple. It\u2019s to support businesses, to grow businesses, and also to dabble in quality of life, like every other entity in the city. It\u2019s definitely an organization that\u2019s driven by business owners, so they know and they feel everything.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">That\u2019s our mission \u2014 to support small businesses and big businesses. It\u2019s a great organization to be part of, and it\u2019s vital to the community.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>NAXI LOPEZ-PUENTE:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> For sure. Edinburg has seen tremendous growth. You all had the State of the City address a week or two ago, and you mentioned there were about 127 subdivisions going up in Edinburg. So there\u2019s big population growth. What are we seeing on the business side? Are we seeing the same thing?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RONNIE LARRALDE:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Yes, we are. And I\u2019m glad you brought up population growth. I tell people, in the 2010 Census there were about 77,000 people, and now we\u2019re at 108,000. So it shows that the city is growing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">And with that, so are businesses. We have over 3,500 businesses in the city. It is growing. Sometimes you don\u2019t see it as much as in other cities where growth runs down one lane or one avenue. Edinburg is growing north, south, east, and west, especially to the north.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">So yes, there are a lot of businesses coming in. There are a lot of opportunities. We have the university, we have the health care system, we have entertainment. There are a lot of key components driving the success of the city as a whole. And obviously the city and its entities \u2014 the EDC and the city itself \u2014 do a great job of keeping up with that growth.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>NAXI LOPEZ-PUENTE:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> You mentioned entertainment, and one of the biggest things the Valley has right now is UTRGV football. Talk to me about how that has impacted Edinburg \u2014 and really the region.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RONNIE LARRALDE:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Definitely. We had a running joke for a while that we were still undefeated. But football just drives a different type of environment, energy, and business.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Everyone knows the Friday night lights culture, and the Rio Grande Valley is a perfect example. When a Valley high school team makes the playoffs, the Valley travels. They\u2019ll go to San Antonio, Corpus, Houston, wherever, to support them, even if they\u2019re not from that particular city. It\u2019s just one of those things that is deeply tied to this community.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">So UTRGV football was a long time coming. A lot of steps had to take place. The merger of the two universities, the health care component, the School of Medicine \u2014 all of that drove more people and more funding. And then the students played a huge role too. They were the ones who voted to implement football.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">One of the things we always heard was that something was missing \u2014 that college experience, that university experience everyone talks about. Now it has opened the doors to everyone. There\u2019s the band, the cheer squad, dance, swimming \u2014 all these things opened the door. There are new opportunities for our kids and for other students to experience university through different athletic programs. And ultimately, education is the key. So it has opened a lot of doors for us.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>NAXI LOPEZ-PUENTE:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> And it\u2019s not just education. It\u2019s the business community too. My understanding is that businesses in Edinburg are seeing game-day impacts. We sent out a reporter to gauge the atmosphere, and people were excited. I know the economic impact is something you all are going to touch on at an event coming up. Talk to me about that. You\u2019ve got a big headliner coming through.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RONNIE LARRALDE:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Yes. And you\u2019re absolutely right. We\u2019re not even talking about the business aspect yet, which will be delivered at that point.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">But just to give some sense, a local meat market would say their big day used to be Sunday, and now it\u2019s Saturday and Sunday. People are tailgating. Restaurants are seeing more business. Hotels are being impacted.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">So a lot of small businesses, especially those near the university, are being affected in a positive way. It\u2019s driving people here on a Saturday \u2014 12,500 people gassing up, eating, going to stores before and after the game. So it does trickle down.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We\u2019ve also seen it from visiting teams. We\u2019ve had alumni organizations and schools contact us asking what restaurants they can go to, where they can stay, where they can watch the game. We help lead those efforts and connect them to businesses.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>NAXI LOPEZ-PUENTE:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> That\u2019s a really good resource \u2014 a list of where people can go watch the game, where they can stay, those kinds of things.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RONNIE LARRALDE:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> And we have all that on our website.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>NAXI LOPEZ-PUENTE:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Great. So it\u2019s already there.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RONNIE LARRALDE:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Yes. So it\u2019s definitely impacting our business community a whole lot.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">With that said, we\u2019re having this big conference coming up next week.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>NAXI LOPEZ-PUENTE:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Yes, April 23.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RONNIE LARRALDE:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Correct. It\u2019s definitely a conference that is needed, especially for our growing community. And it\u2019s not just for Edinburg. It\u2019s for the whole Rio Grande Valley.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>NAXI LOPEZ-PUENTE:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> So it\u2019s open to any business, not just Edinburg businesses.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RONNIE LARRALDE:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> That is correct.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>NAXI LOPEZ-PUENTE:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> And not just chamber members either.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RONNIE LARRALDE:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> That is correct.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>NAXI LOPEZ-PUENTE:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Okay, so for those who don\u2019t know, talk to us about the Business Playbook.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RONNIE LARRALDE:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Yes, the Business Playbook. A little history on that: we have a very aggressive board. We\u2019re governed by 13 people who represent the business community, so they understand what\u2019s going on.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This really started last year during a membership drive. Everything we do is membership-driven. You don\u2019t have to be a member of our chamber to attend this event or many of our events. Some are exclusive, but for the most part, they\u2019re open. There are just different perks \u2014 member rates versus nonmember rates, and a lot of opportunities that come with membership.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">So the board wanted to provide something business-based and membership-based. I\u2019ve always dreamed that way for a lot of things \u2014 entertainment, football, all of it. Why not us? Why can\u2019t we have those things?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">So they took that same approach with this conference. Why can\u2019t we have a big conference that\u2019s affordable, right here in our backyard, and bring in a keynote speaker who\u2019s nationally recognized? That was one of the things really driving them from last year\u2019s membership campaign to now.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">That leads us to the Business Playbook. We talked a little bit about how to tie the theme together. A little background is that April 23 is also NFL Draft Day.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>NAXI LOPEZ-PUENTE:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Okay.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RONNIE LARRALDE:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> So that\u2019s a big component, especially with UTRGV football. It\u2019s that steppingstone to success, becoming a professional athlete at that level. We kind of spun that into the Business Playbook \u2014 having a playbook for success and providing different components at the seminar.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">And obviously, we talked about the keynote speaker.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>NAXI LOPEZ-PUENTE:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Right. Big name. A very recognizable name here in our area.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RONNIE LARRALDE:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Yes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>NAXI LOPEZ-PUENTE:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Tell us who\u2019s coming.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RONNIE LARRALDE:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Emmitt Smith. He\u2019s a great speaker, if you haven\u2019t seen him speak. He definitely has a lot to bring to the table \u2014 teamwork, leadership, a lot of things that drive success in business.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">He obviously knew football, and then transitioned into being an entrepreneur and business owner. He\u2019s involved in real estate. So besides the highlights \u2014 15-plus years and being the all-time leading rusher \u2014 he definitely brings other aspects to the table. He\u2019s a great motivator.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">So this is definitely a conference you\u2019d find at a national level, and it\u2019s right here in our backyard. It\u2019s very affordable. We\u2019re proud of our board for putting something like this together to help our business community.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>NAXI LOPEZ-PUENTE:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Wow. How did you get Emmitt Smith?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RONNIE LARRALDE:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> I know, everybody asks me that.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>NAXI LOPEZ-PUENTE:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Did you just send him an email?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RONNIE LARRALDE:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> That\u2019s exactly how it went, right? We\u2019re so used to quality-of-life events, and as you know, we have different events that we do for the community, so we usually book artists. It was really our network.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">That\u2019s one piece everyone forgets about \u2014 your network is really your net worth. Talking to the person we always deal with for artists, someone we\u2019ve built a relationship with over 10 or 15 years, and just asking, \u201cHey, by chance, do you know\u2026?\u201d It was really just a phone call. That\u2019s how it happened.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">And little by little, it happens. It happens at the corporate level, too. Knowing someone, having that network, is really strong.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>NAXI LOPEZ-PUENTE:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> And that\u2019s one of the things you all point out too \u2014 networking. Because like you said, your network usually leads to your net worth. That\u2019s something business owners will be able to do at your conference. What else can they expect, aside from Emmitt Smith?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RONNIE LARRALDE:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Definitely. We have some seminars lined up, and we\u2019re getting ready to release all of those. There are different components.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Obviously, there are networking opportunities. Being there with local business owners, entrepreneurs, and people with experience is important. You\u2019re going to get to hear from a few of them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">One of the sessions is on marketing and social media. We understand how important that is. I always say you have to combine everything. You can\u2019t be one-dimensional. We talk about the three phases of football. It\u2019s kind of the same thing in business.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">You have face-to-face interaction \u2014 meeting with someone individually, attending events \u2014 but you still need that digital presence.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>NAXI LOPEZ-PUENTE:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> If you\u2019re not online, if you\u2019re not on social media, do you even exist?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RONNIE LARRALDE:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Exactly. That\u2019s a huge component. So one of the sessions is called \u201cThe Call Play: Marketing and Social Media.\u201d We\u2019re going to have a few individuals there to talk about those topics \u2014 people who are known in the area for that work.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We also have a session on leveraging local resources \u2014 making sure there\u2019s a game plan to success. We talked about the university, which is huge, but there are also a lot of resources people don\u2019t take advantage of.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>NAXI LOPEZ-PUENTE:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Like SBDC.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RONNIE LARRALDE:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Right. That\u2019s one. Texas Workforce is another. The Center for Entrepreneurship and Commercialization Success. These are things people just don\u2019t always know about, and the goal is to get the word out.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We also have one on law and taxes. The HB 9 bill that just came up for business owners. Hearing from the appraisal district, hearing about different components that will help a business owner throughout the year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">And they\u2019re going to be there speaking about it. You\u2019re going to have the opportunity to ask questions. It\u2019s more of a dialogue, not just sit and listen.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Then we have others \u2014 the Franchise Playbook, talking to franchise owners; Locker Room Success, which focuses on successful small business owners; Vaquero Outfitters is one example, especially with the rise of UTRGV. So there are a lot of different components that are going to be part of this conference.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>NAXI LOPEZ-PUENTE:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Awesome. So a little bit of everything. Not just your headliner, but something with substance too.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">And I know that\u2019s not the only thing you all have coming up. We were discussing earlier that you\u2019ve also launched initiatives to connect students with the small business community through internships. Talk to us about that.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RONNIE LARRALDE:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Correct. We teamed up with a local bank and with UTRGV to provide this internship program. We had some funds available through the bank\u2019s sponsorship, and we were able to connect chamber members \u2014 another key benefit \u2014 with university students.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We were able to help 14 small businesses get interns through a micro-internship program. Two weeks, sometimes three or four weeks, but something relatively small, at no cost to the business.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>NAXI LOPEZ-PUENTE:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> At no cost?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RONNIE LARRALDE:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> At no cost. Everybody has that to-do list that they say, \u201cIt\u2019s not needed right now.\u201d Maybe it\u2019s a website. Maybe it\u2019s employee handbooks. Maybe it\u2019s digital work. We were connecting those business owners with university students to help plug those gaps.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>NAXI LOPEZ-PUENTE:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> What kind of students were they? Finance, marketing, a little of everything?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RONNIE LARRALDE:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> A little of everything. Communications. Mostly business students. Different students helping with different components. It was a great program that just started this past year, so we\u2019re hoping to continue it, go back to the drawing board with the university and the bank, figure out a way to increase the amount, and help more small business owners.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>NAXI LOPEZ-PUENTE:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Okay. What else is going on at the chamber?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RONNIE LARRALDE:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> One thing I failed to mention is that we\u2019re going to have UTRGV football present its economic impact numbers at the conference. This will be the first time those numbers are released.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">So that\u2019s going to be a huge luncheon and seminar portion. We\u2019re going to have athletic director Chasse Conque on that panel. Our mayor, Ramiro Garza Jr., will also be there, along with Harig Govind, who owns the TownPlace Suites by Marriott and is a past president of the chamber board and the EDC.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">He\u2019s seen the impact firsthand \u2014 visitors, teams staying there, and not just there. Sometimes the demand is too large, so teams stay in neighboring cities too. Like we said, Edinburg and the Rio Grande Valley benefit as a whole.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>NAXI LOPEZ-PUENTE:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Because when somebody comes in, they\u2019re not thinking, \u201cI\u2019m only going to shop in Edinburg.\u201d Maybe they stay in McAllen, maybe somewhere else. But it does draw economic activity. So those numbers will be presented at the conference?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RONNIE LARRALDE:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Yes. It\u2019s going to be a huge unveiling. We\u2019re happy to see what that has brought to the table, and I know a lot of people are waiting for that portion. It\u2019s definitely a key highlight, along with Emmitt.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>NAXI LOPEZ-PUENTE:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> We\u2019re certainly curious about that. We want to know what the impact has been.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RONNIE LARRALDE:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Yes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>NAXI LOPEZ-PUENTE:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> All right.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RONNIE LARRALDE:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> So, transitioning into what the chamber does, on top of this conference and the seminars we put on \u2014 which are open to everyone \u2014 we also offer what we call continuing education programs, learning from experts, whether it\u2019s through the university or local businesses.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We bring them to the table and connect business owners so they can learn from the best who are already doing it here.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We also offer networking services, advertising opportunities. Our newsletter is huge. We have a big following. We also get a lot of visitors. I haven\u2019t even talked about that. We\u2019re different from some other chambers because we have that visitor center side. We also oversee the CVB, so Explore Edinburg.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We get a lot of people coming in, and that\u2019s why we also work in the hotel and restaurant industry, trying to bring events and conferences down, anything that\u2019s going to draw tourism to the city. So we do a little bit of everything, including quality-of-life events.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We just had Fiesta Edinburg, which drew in 25,000 people to Bert Ogden Arena.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>NAXI LOPEZ-PUENTE:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Wow.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RONNIE LARRALDE:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> That\u2019s something that draws people from the entire Valley. And then our next big event is the Fourth of July. Everyone will start hearing about that now, especially with America\u2019s 250th birthday coming up. It\u2019s a huge event right here.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>NAXI LOPEZ-PUENTE:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Huge event. Huge.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RONNIE LARRALDE:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> It\u2019s like 12,000 to 15,000 people right here in your own backyard. I think that\u2019s the driving force behind the city and the chamber of commerce \u2014 providing these opportunities and experiences that people used to go outside the Valley to find, and now bringing them here.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>NAXI LOPEZ-PUENTE:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> And correct me if I\u2019m wrong \u2014 I think I heard this at the State of the City \u2014 but Edinburg has had hundreds of events per year. The number in my head is over 300. Is that accurate?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RONNIE LARRALDE:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> I\u2019m pretty sure it\u2019s 150.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>NAXI LOPEZ-PUENTE:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Okay.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RONNIE LARRALDE:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> But we also have the Night of Lights Parade, which is a big draw. The cultural arts department does a good job with events, and we forget about Parks and Rec too \u2014 the 10K, the marathon, the triathlon. There are different events across departments that all combine into that larger total.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We\u2019ve kind of positioned ourselves as the city of festivals. Each department has those events that they drive. They\u2019re all needed, and we\u2019re proud of them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>NAXI LOPEZ-PUENTE:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> So if somebody wants to become a chamber member, or if they want to participate in the conference, where do they go?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RONNIE LARRALDE:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> The Edinburg Chamber is right across, almost across, from City Hall. I recommend people come in because it\u2019s a gorgeous building. It\u2019s the Southern Pacific Depot, and in two years it\u2019ll be 100 years old. It\u2019s a historical landmark here.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">But you can also visit us online at edinburg.com. You\u2019ll find all of our membership information there. You can click through to the conference too. Emmitt Smith\u2019s face is right there on the front.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>NAXI LOPEZ-PUENTE:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> You can\u2019t miss it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RONNIE LARRALDE:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Exactly. So one thing the board really wanted to drive is affordability. That\u2019s a big word right now.
