Brownsville Mayor John Cowen says more than 576 police calls and public safety incidents over the past 18 months have prompted the city to increase enforcement efforts in the Midtown Entertainment District, where city leaders say repeated violations are placing growing demands on police and emergency responders.<\/p>\n

Cowen took to social media on Sunday to highlight that public safety personnel responded to more than 576 calls for service between Jan. 1, 2025, and June 24, 2026, during peak nightlife hours in a concentrated area of businesses along Pablo Kisel Boulevard.<\/p>\n\n

The area, known as the Midtown Entertainment District<\/a>, is centered along Pablo Kisel Boulevard. In recent years, it has become one of Brownsville\u2019s primary nightlife destinations, attracting restaurants, bars, and entertainment venues.<\/p>\n\n

Cowen said the incidents resulted in 158 arrests and required the city to spend roughly $25,000 each month in public safety resources.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n

Inspections and enforcement efforts there uncovered a range of violations, including underage drinking, possession of cocaine and other illegal narcotics, bars serving alcohol after legal operating hours, occupancy and age-verification violations, and lewd or lascivious behavior inside the establishments.<\/p>\n\n

The mayor emphasized that the city\u2019s objective is to make sure businesses are complying with the law.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n

\u201cLet me be clear: our goal is not to shut down businesses. Our goal is compliance and safety,\u201d Cowen said.<\/p>\n\n

The city has spent the past year working with businesses in the entertainment district to improve compliance while maintaining public safety.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n

\u201cWe want businesses to succeed, patrons to enjoy themselves responsibly, and our police officers, firefighters, business owners, employees, and residents to have a safe environment,\u201d Cowen said.<\/p>\n\n

He added that Brownsville remains committed to working with business owners who operate responsibly and comply with state and local laws.<\/p>\n\n
