{"id":18693,"date":"2026-06-07T18:59:58","date_gmt":"2026-06-07T23:59:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rgvbusinessjournal.com\/news\/15\/07\/2026\/para-los-diabeticos-del-valle-los-gusanos-de-la-carne-podrian-suponer-una-amenaza-sanitaria-especial\/"},"modified":"2026-07-15T07:39:38","modified_gmt":"2026-07-15T12:39:38","slug":"para-los-diabeticos-del-valle-los-gusanos-de-la-carne-podrian-suponer-una-amenaza-sanitaria-especial","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rgvbusinessjournal.com\/es\/news\/07\/06\/2026\/para-los-diabeticos-del-valle-los-gusanos-de-la-carne-podrian-suponer-una-amenaza-sanitaria-especial\/","title":{"rendered":"Para los diab\u00e9ticos del Valle, los gusanos de la carne podr\u00edan suponer una amenaza sanitaria especial"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 1968 41-year-old Gregoria Castillo, a farm worker from Pleasanton, checked into the Santa Rosa Medical Center in San Antonio and quickly lapsed into a coma.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The mother of two had been working in a field a couple weeks earlier and gotten a nosebleed.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The nosebleeds kept recurring. Doctors were unable to stop them.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In San Antonio, doctors finally learned the gruesome cause of Castillo\u2019s nosebleeds: screwworms.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A fly, doctors speculated, had likely laid its eggs in or near Castillo\u2019s nose or mouth, hatching into larvae that began to feed on the walls of her respiratory tract.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Doctors could do little to help Castillo or hurt the worms. One told the press that \u201cany drug strong enough to kill the worms would probably kill Castillo.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Within a day Castillo died.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While relatively rare compared to cases in animals, screwworm infestations in humans are possible and with the pest once again in Texas, it could impact the health of Rio Grande Valley residents.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Last week, the U.S. Department of Agriculture confirmed two cases in South Texas.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2024 Costa Rica reported its <a href=\"https:\/\/cr.usembassy.gov\/health-alert-screwworm-in-costa-rica-june-21-2024\/\">first death<\/a> attributed to screwworms since at least the 1990s.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Last August a person who had traveled to El Salvador was diagnosed with a screwworm infestation after returning to the United States \u2014 the first human case of screwworms in America in years.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Local health officials say they\u2019re prepared for the threat.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe are monitoring. Most of those cases were in Texas.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dr. S.C. Gartman, who at the time was program director of the Southwest Screwworm Eradication Center in Mission and an expert in the field, described cases as likely underreported and relatively common in the Valley before the pests eradication.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Prot described screwworms as \u201clargely an animal concern,\u201d which is also how Hidalgo County Lead Epidemiologist Amy Gonzalez described the pest.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe may encounter a couple cases here or there,\u201d she said. \u201cThey may not be as severe as what we see in the animals, where they\u2019re basically being eaten alive for the most part.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Prot and Gonzalez both said their offices have been educating people in the area about the health risks of screwworms.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the whole, Gonzalez said she\u2019s optimistic about efforts to control the pest in livestock and animals, mitigating the risk to people in the Valley.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She anticipates isolated human cases if screwworms arrive in the Valley. Clusters of infestations are possible, Gonzalez said, though it would be unlikely for infestations to become widespread through a community.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFor the humans, for the most part, we know there\u2019s a potential there but it\u2019s nothing nearly as close to what the animals may be facing,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Healthy people infected with screwworms, Gonzalez said, will probably notice it.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She says there will be a burning sensation and that the health outlook is good.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some people in the Valley, however, will be at greater risk of being more severely impacted by screwworms, specifically diabetics.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Diabetics can develop diabetic neuropathy, nerve damage that can deaden their sensation.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gonzalez says those people could be infested with screwworms and not even notice.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThey won\u2019t feel it,\u201d Gonzalez said. \u201cThey won\u2019t know they have it until it\u2019s really bad and somebody else notices it, and by then they have to chop off their leg or they have to undergo surgery.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Experts <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dhrhealth.com\/news-stories\/dhr-health-earns-national-recognition-for-diabetes-care\/\">estimate<\/a> about a third of people in the Valley are diabetic, which Gonzalez says makes detecting possible infestations early particularly important locally.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For diabetics, Gonzalez recommends daily checks for screwworms in cuts and wounds.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Prot said people who travel to places where screwworms have been confirmed, who spend a lot of time outside, who work with animals or who live near animals should take precautions outdoors: they should wear long sleeves and socks, cover wounds, and use EPA approved insecticide \u2014 preferably with deet.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">People whose window screens are missing or ripped should probably replace them.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSleeping indoors and having no access to flies that come indoors will be very helpful to you,\u201d Prot said.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If doctors do recognize wounds on a person with larvae or maggots, they should contact their local health department, which will facilitate testing and identification, Prot said.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s important to do it in the correct manner to not spread any larvae,\u201d she said, noting suspected larvae should be put into an alcohol solution before being submitted for testing and that additional larvae should be disposed of in a sealed
