{"id":19524,"date":"2026-07-02T22:25:50","date_gmt":"2026-07-03T03:25:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rgvbusinessjournal.com\/news\/15\/07\/2026\/las-empresas-constructoras-del-valle-advierten-de-que-el-endurecimiento-de-las-medidas-de-control-de-la-inmigracion-esta-volviendo-a-afectar-al-sector-de-la-construccion\/"},"modified":"2026-07-15T07:41:48","modified_gmt":"2026-07-15T12:41:48","slug":"las-empresas-constructoras-del-valle-advierten-de-que-el-endurecimiento-de-las-medidas-de-control-de-la-inmigracion-esta-volviendo-a-afectar-al-sector-de-la-construccion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rgvbusinessjournal.com\/es\/news\/02\/07\/2026\/las-empresas-constructoras-del-valle-advierten-de-que-el-endurecimiento-de-las-medidas-de-control-de-la-inmigracion-esta-volviendo-a-afectar-al-sector-de-la-construccion\/","title":{"rendered":"Las empresas constructoras del valle advierten de que el endurecimiento de las medidas de control de la inmigraci\u00f3n est\u00e1 volviendo a afectar al sector de la construcci\u00f3n"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">PHARR \u2014 \u201cWe\u2019re back to square one.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s the warning South Texas Builders Association CEO Mario Guerrero delivered Thursday after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/share\/v\/1bm8G5TvPV\/\">posting a video to social media<\/a> that he said showed the aftermath of immigration enforcement activity at two Rio Grande Valley residential construction sites.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the video, Guerrero said foundation crews had been \u201cpicked up,\u201d leaving unfinished concrete pours and largely empty job sites, while other workers were increasingly afraid to report to construction sites.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The warning comes as federal immigration enforcement has intensified across the country.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Earlier this week, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement announced roughly 10,000 arrests of people in the country illegally during a five-day enforcement operation, one of the agency\u2019s largest recent enforcement pushes.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For the Rio Grande Valley, the heightened enforcement also comes days after Sister Leticia \u201cLetty\u201d Ugboaja, a Catholic nun and registered nurse in McAllen, was detained Sunday while on her way to Mass before later being released. The incident drew national attention and renewed local discussions about immigration enforcement.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The latest developments represent another chapter in a story the<em> Rio Grande Valley Business Journal<\/em> has been following since late 2025, when builders first began warning that immigration enforcement was disrupting residential construction and creating ripple effects across the regional economy.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since then, builders, lenders, title companies, construction suppliers and elected officials have been warning that worksite enforcement, combined with labor shortages, tariffs and higher borrowing costs, have delayed projects, increased financing expenses, and added pressure to the Valley\u2019s housing market.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now, Guerrero says many of those same concerns are resurfacing.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-large our podcast with Mario Guerrero.<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAs you all know, the construction industry has been terrorized with these raids that are currently happening in the construction industry,\u201d Guerrero said in Thursday\u2019s video. \u201cPeople are not showing up to work.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The video shows fresh concrete, construction equipment, and partially completed foundations at what Guerrero identified as two residential subdivisions.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis is a major problem,\u201d Guerrero said. \u201cIf you, as a consumer, believe that life is more expensive now and the purchase of a home has gotten extremely out of hand, this is only going to enhance that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Guerrero\u2019s warning echoes concerns he shared with the <em>Journal <\/em>earlier this year.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During an<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rgvbusinessjournal.com\/es\/podcast\/mario-guerrero-de-la-asociacion-de-constructores-del-sur-de-texas-habla-sobre-las-redadas-de-inmigracion-la-vivienda-y-la-construccion\/\"> interview on the Journal\u2019s podcast<\/a>, Guerrero argued that interruptions at construction sites can quickly ripple through the broader economy.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A delayed concrete pour, he said, can force builders to remove hardened concrete, replace materials, and repeat inspections, turning one disruption into tens of thousands of dollars in additional costs.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019m not saying not to do your job,\u201d Guerrero said during that interview. \u201cWhat I\u2019m saying is you\u2019re causing harm to the economy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He also warned that longer construction timelines affect far more than builders.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many homes are financed with short-term construction loans, meaning delays increase interest costs, postpone loan repayments, and can ultimately affect banks, suppliers, and future residential development.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Over the past several months, the <em>Journal<\/em> has reported that some builders have begun renting homes originally intended for sale to offset carrying costs, while lenders have grown more cautious about financing new subdivisions as projects take longer to complete.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Guerrero said Thursday that the latest enforcement activity threatens to compound challenges the industry was already facing.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe system is broken,\u201d he said. \u201cPeople are not showing up to work. The United States system has not provided a proper pathway in order for people to learn how to actually do these trades, and that\u2019s only going to raise pricing on every trade that it takes to create a home for the consumer to purchase at a good price.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In response, the South Texas Builders Association is once again calling for a regional conversation.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The association announced Thursday that it will host a public meeting from 10 a.m. to noon July 29 at the Brookhaven Event Center in Pharr.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The group invited elected officials from Roma to Brownsville, sheriffs, law enforcement agencies, business owners, builders, real estate professionals, community leaders, news organizations, and residents to discuss what it describes as the immigration crisis affecting the Rio Grande Valley.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The meeting mirrors the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rgvbusinessjournal.com\/es\/news\/17\/11\/2025\/los-constructores-del-sur-de-texas-presionan-a-las-autoridades-para-que-tomen-medidas-ya-que-las-redadas-generalizadas-del-ice-estan-causando-estragos-en-las-obras-y-poniendo-a-prueba-la-economia-de\/\">association\u2019s first large public forum on the issue last November<\/a>, when hundreds of builders, suppliers, lenders, and community members gathered in Pharr to discuss how immigration enforcement was affecting the construction industry.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since then, lawmakers from both political parties have met with builders, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rgvbusinessjournal.com\/es\/news\/24\/11\/2025\/un-diputado-del-valle-del-rio-grande-propondra-un-nuevo-programa-de-visados-para-trabajadores-inmigrantes-destinado-a-las-pequenas-empresas\/\">legislation has been introduced <\/a>in Congress aimed at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rgvbusinessjournal.com\/es\/news\/28\/01\/2026\/las-empresas-constructoras-del-valle-respaldan-un-proyecto-de-ley-para-que-los-trabajadores-indocumentados-con-antiguedad-puedan-trabajar-de-forma-legal\/\">expanding legal work authorization<\/a>, and local officials have publicly acknowledged the industry\u2019s concerns.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Still, builders say many of the workforce challenges they raised months ago remain unresolved, despite their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rgvbusinessjournal.com\/es\/news\/22\/01\/2026\/los-alcaldes-del-sur-de-texas-viajan-a-washington-d-c-para-abordar-las-redadas-de-ice-y-sus-repercusiones-economicas\/\">advocacy efforts<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe need your help,\u201d Guerrero said Thursday. \u201cThis is not anything other than a cry for help from our elected officials that should
