“This program has proven to be a catalyst for entrepreneurship and local investment,” said Teclo Garcia, CEO of Mission EDC. “By reducing financial barriers, we’re empowering small businesses to thrive, which in turn strengthens Mission’s economy and quality of life.”

The program, part of Mission EDC’s Ruby Red Ventures initiative, aims to help local entrepreneurs expand, renovate, and strengthen their operations. Applications opened Oct. 1 and will run through Oct. 31, with awards scheduled for November.

This year, the corporation allocated $225,000 to the program, continuing its investment in small business growth and local job creation.

Program’s impact

In 2024, Mission EDC awarded $220,000 to 16 small businesses, providing critical funds for upgrades, expansions, and working capital.

Among last year’s recipients was Nancy Santillana, owner of YumYum, who used her grant to replace the roof and renovate the façade of her family-owned restaurant that’s served Mission residents for more than 25 years.

“We’re so grateful that we have this opportunity to expand, renew, and keep this safe space for this community,” Santillana said. “We probably would’ve done the renovations anyway, but it would have taken us longer to do all these things that we want to do.”

Mission EDC officials said the program continues to attract strong participation, with more than 90 applicants last year.

Eligible businesses must be located within Mission city limits.
