Puerto del Norte–Matamoros is officially in service, receiving its first vessel on Aug. 1: a shipment of KIA vehicles from Panama.

The arrival marks the start of operations at Mexico’s newest Gulf seaport, located about an hour’s drive from the Texas border.

“This infrastructure represents a strategic opportunity not only for Tamaulipas, but also for states such as Nuevo León and Coahuila, as well as for major assembly plants in the country’s center,” said David García, president of the Matamoros Business Coordinating Council (CCEM).

Gustavo Guzmán Fernández, director general of the Integral Port Administration of Tamaulipas (API), emphasized the broader scope: “This isn’t a port just for Tamaulipas. It belongs to Nuevo León, Coahuila, San Luis Potosí, and Texas. And more importantly: wherever we can achieve the lowest times and costs, that’s where we’ll be.”

Infrastructure and operations

According to API, the port is equipped with a 10-kilometer navigation channel, a 138-meter quay, and depths of up to eight meters. Maritime signaling and on-site customs clearance are already in place for immediate operations.

From launch, managers are positioning the facility as a direct link between assembly plants, regional distribution centers, and international markets.

New trade option

Puerto del Norte plugs into USMCA trade corridors used daily by Rio Grande Valley shippers, with road and rail links to Monterrey, Saltillo, and San Luis Potosí.

For Valley-based carriers, 3PLs, and importers/exporters, the port offers another Gulf option close to Brownsville. Operators say it could help relieve congestion and align with established routes to Houston, San Antonio, and Laredo.

García added that coordination with Mexico’s Navy and new C5 monitoring centers should reinforce secure operations.

“This project will not only facilitate cargo movement, it also positions us as a new gateway for international trade in northeastern Mexico,” he said.

Economic ripple effects

Advisors say the impact extends beyond logistics.

“Projects like this don’t only require logistics services; they also generate the movement of personnel and opportunities for sectors such as hospitality, automotive, and professional services,” Alma Rosa Garza Díaz, a partner at Pérez Garza y Asociados, said. “There’s a significant chain of impact.”

Why it matters for the RGV

A near-border seaport wired to northern Mexico’s manufacturing belt could alter how Gulf-bound cargo is staged on both sides of the Rio Grande.

If Puerto del Norte delivers faster turns and lower costs, Rio Grande Valley firms may gain new routing options for vehicles, components, and general cargo without relying exclusively on more distant Gulf ports.
