Edinburg ISD rejects nearly $6M offer for prime land near La Sienna despite $15M budget deficit

A cashstrapped Edinburg school board last month turned down an almost $6 million offer to buy 113.35 acres of school district land just north of Edinburg’s largest master-planned community to a developer associated with that project in hopes of getting a more lucrative offer.

On Sept. 2, the Edinburg board declined to sell that property to Rhodes Development, which wanted to turn it into low or moderate-income housing, and opted instead to list the property for bids.

That school district land on Davis Road in Edinburg sits about a mile east of Highway 281 and a little north of La Sienna, a sprawling upscale development that’s been gradually built over the course of the past two decades.

The developed parts of La Sienna make up perhaps a little less than half of a rough quadrangle of land running as much as a mile east of the expressway between Davis and Monte Cristo Roads.
