S-Mart has opened its seventh supermarket in Matamoros following a 230 million peso ($12.6 million) investment, with plans to add another location next year and potentially a ninth.
The new store opened last week at 190 Diego Rivera Ave. in the Lomas de San Juan subdivision, according to information provided by the Matamoros city government.
The supermarket is expected to generate 200 permanent direct jobs and 100 indirect jobs during operations. The project also generated an estimated 200 temporary construction jobs, according to the city’s project information.
With the opening, S-Mart now operates 103 stores across Mexico. The Matamoros Chamber of Commerce, Services and Tourism reported that the chain has 1,250 formal-sector jobs in the city.
