Millennials in Edinburg are earning significantly more than their peers across the Rio Grande Valley and much of the state, according to a new SmartAsset study that analyzed income patterns among 357 of the largest U.S. cities.

The report found that Millennial households in Edinburg earn a median income of $79,139, compared with $59,851 for all households, a striking 32.2% earnings premium. That makes Edinburg one of the few midsize Texas cities where younger workers are outpacing the broader population by such a wide margin.
“The opportunities available in the city of Edinburg for investors are plentiful, but the workforce is definitely essential,” Raudel Garza, executive director for the Edinburg Economic Development Corporation, said during a recent presentation for CoSTEP. “The majority are young individuals eager to specialize and gain experience.”
The findings highlight a growing economic divide within South Texas, one that may stem from Edinburg’s unique position as a government, medical, and educational hub.
