Cavender’s Boot City is expanding its Rio Grande Valley footprint with a new store planned along West University Drive in Edinburg, a project expected to bring a $5 million private investment and about 15 full-time jobs.
The Edinburg Economic Development Corporation (EDC) announced Tuesday that Cavender’s Boot City and Whitco PGP Properties A, L.P. purchased the former CVS property at 2820 W. University Dr. to develop the store.
The site sits on one of Edinburg’s busiest commercial corridors, near The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, an area city officials describe as among the most active retail stretches in Hidalgo County.

“We’re excited to welcome Cavender’s Boot City to Edinburg,” Edinburg EDC Board President Aaron Rivera said in a news release Tuesday. “This investment shows the confidence that major retailers have in our community’s growth and potential. The project will create good jobs, expand shopping options for residents, and generate revenue that supports our city.”
The new location is projected to generate more than $4 million in annual retail sales during its first five years of operation, Edinburg EDC officials said.
The announcement follows news that Cavender’s is also planning a new store in Weslaco, signaling a broader expansion strategy in the Valley.
The family-owned Texas retailer operates more than 120 stores across Texas and 18 in other states since its founding in 1965.

“We’re thrilled to enter the Edinburg market and become part of this growing community,” Mike Cavender, owner of Cavender Stores LP, said in the release. “The Rio Grande Valley has a strong western heritage, and we look forward to serving families in Edinburg and surrounding areas with the same quality and service that Cavender’s has been known for more than 60 years.”
Construction and facility improvements at the Edinburg site are expected to begin in the coming months, with a grand opening targeted for later this year.
