South Texas mayors join forces on water, infrastructure and economic development

At least four times a year, several mayors across South Texas gather to share insight about what’s working in their communities, which businesses could be recruited in collaboration, how far along regional infrastructure projects are in the pipeline, whether the workforce is ready for the next generation of jobs, and what the region may pitch to state and federal officials as big-impact investments.

The South Texas Mayors Alliance was created in 2023 as an effort to tackle any regional issues together.

McAllen Mayor Javier Villalobos hosted the most recent meeting inside the Center for Urban Ecology, the newest expansion of the not-yet-opened Quinta Mazatlan, which is undergoing renovations.

“I think we’re a little bit behind in infrastructure, and that’s one of the main things,” Villalobos said about attracting more state and federal matching funds to move regional projects forward, one of the priorities for the group.
