Brownsville airport awarded $1.49M federal grant for upgrades

The Brownsville South Padre Island International Airport has been awarded nearly $1.5 million in federal funding to replace critical airfield signage, improve safety, and enhance airport operations, local and federal officials announced Wednesday.

U.S. Rep. Vicente Gonzalez, D-McAllen, announced the airport will receive $1,491,504 in federal funding to replace airfield signage and improve operational efficiency.

“Brownsville is a vital gateway that fuels economic growth and connects families to communities across the border and throughout our nation,” Gonzalez said in a social media statement. “This investment in our airport’s long-term future will ensure that pilots and passengers alike can travel safely.”

Brownsville Mayor John Cowen Jr. said the funding will help modernize critical airport infrastructure while supporting the region’s continued growth.

“Our Brownsville South Padre Island International Airport has been awarded more than $1.4 million in federal funding to replace critical airfield signage, enhance safety and improve operations,” Cowen said. “As an important gateway for our region, these investments help support economic growth and ensure safe travel for residents and visitors.”

Brownsville City Commissioner Linda Macias praised the federal investment, calling it critical to the airport’s continued growth.

“We are grateful for Congressman Gonzalez’s partnership in supporting critical infrastructure that benefits our community and promotes continued economic growth,” Macias said.

Airport officials said the funding will replace aging airfield signage, improving airfield navigation and operational safety for pilots while supporting the airport’s long-term infrastructure needs.
