A new Starbucks café is planned inside Macy’s at La Plaza Mall in McAllen as part of a $600,000 renovation project filed with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation.

The project, registered Thursday, calls for interior improvements to create a new 300-square-foot Starbucks café inside the existing Macy’s store at 2100 S. 10th St., according to state records.

Construction is scheduled to begin Oct. 12 and wrap up by Dec. 4, if the timeline outlined in the filing holds.

The filing describes the work as interior renovations for a new Starbucks café, including mechanical, electrical and plumbing improvements. No exterior work or structural modifications are planned.

The project is privately funded and will be paid for by Macy’s Inc., according to the filing. No tenant has yet been listed in the registration.

Architecture 359 Inc., an Ohio-based design firm that has worked on retail projects nationwide, is listed as the project’s designer. Marc Frame is the registered accessibility specialist overseeing compliance with the Texas Architectural Barriers Act.

The renovation represents another investment at La Plaza Mall, the Rio Grande Valley’s largest shopping center, which continues to attract new retailers, restaurant concepts and store upgrades as consumer spending remains strong in the region.

While Starbucks already operates multiple standalone cafés and licensed locations throughout McAllen, the project would add another in-store location inside one of the mall’s anchor department stores, giving shoppers a new option without leaving Macy’s.

As of publication, neither Macy’s nor Starbucks had announced the project publicly or released additional details about the café’s expected opening date. The TDLR filing reflects a planned construction project and does not guarantee completion on the proposed schedule.
