Brownsville city commissioners have rescheduled a special meeting to take a final vote on a SpaceX request to remove approximately 444 acres from the city’s boundaries.

The meeting, originally scheduled for Friday, will now take place at 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 29, at Brownsville City Hall.

Commissioners are expected to consider the second reading of an ordinance to voluntarily disannex the property, which is located along South Connector Road just east of the Brownsville landfill.

The commission approved the ordinance on first reading Aug. 21. If approved on second reading, the property would be removed from Brownsville’s corporate limits and extraterritorial jurisdiction, taking it outside the city’s zoning control.

SpaceX has said the land would be used to expand its operations closer to the Port of Brownsville and would not be used for rocket launches or testing.

The request also comes as SpaceX negotiates a potential investment in a regional water project that Brownsville officials say could roughly double potable water production capacity.

Learn more about why SpaceX wants the land removed from Brownsville and how the regional water discussions factor into the decision.
