Saronic Technologies is set to break ground Wednesday on its $3.2 billion Port Alpha shipyard at the Port of Brownsville, moving one of the largest economic development projects in Rio Grande Valley history from announcement toward construction.

Vice President J.D. Vance and Texas Gov. Greg Abbott are expected to join Saronic leadership for the Sept. 30 groundbreaking.
The ceremony comes less than three months after Saronic announced it had selected Brownsville for Port Alpha, a next-generation shipyard designed to build medium- and large-class autonomous and autonomy-capable vessels.
The Austin-based defense technology company plans to invest about $3.2 billion in the project and create up to 10,000 direct jobs as the shipyard is built out.
