Foreign-Trade Zone No. 12 has expanded into Willacy County, giving eligible businesses there a new opportunity to seek foreign-trade zone designation at their facilities.

The U.S. Foreign-Trade Zones Board approved the reorganization of FTZ No. 12 under the Alternative Site Framework, expanding its service area from Hidalgo County to include Willacy County, according to an announcement on Thursday from the McAllen foreign-trade zone.

The expansion means businesses throughout Willacy County, including those operating in and around Port Mansfield, can explore whether their facilities qualify for designation under FTZ No. 12.

Foreign-trade zones are designated areas within the United States where companies can receive certain customs-related benefits when importing, storing, manufacturing or processing goods involved in international commerce. Businesses generally must apply for authorization to operate under the program; inclusion within a service area does not automatically give individual businesses foreign-trade zone status.
