NextDecade expects to begin producing liquefied natural gas at its Rio Grande LNG export facility in the second quarter of 2027 as construction of the project’s first phase advances ahead of schedule.
The Houston-based energy company said in its Oct. 29 third-quarter business update that the first production unit, known as Train 1, is expected to reach substantial completion in the third quarter of 2027, one quarter earlier than the deadline established under its construction contract with Bechtel Energy.
The milestone would move the multibillion-dollar project closer to becoming an operational LNG export terminal along the Brownsville Ship Channel.
“During the third quarter, we maintained strong momentum on Rio Grande LNG Phase 1 as we continued to advance construction and commissioning activities safely, on budget, and ahead of schedule,” said Matt Schatzman, NextDecade chairman and CEO.
