Rio Grande Valley residents no longer have to cross the border or drive hours away to get a taste of an ice cold Cerveza Barrilito.

Weslaco distributor Glazer’s Beer & Beverage began distributing Cerveza Barrilito beer last week, becoming the second company to distribute the popular Mexican beer in Texas.

The other distributor is in El Paso, according to Glazer’s.

Glazer’s Area Sales Manager Rosangelica Garcia said the first shipments of Barrilito arrived last Monday.

“It’s being sold at convenience stores, drive-thrus, supermarkets,” she said. “All Valleywide, from Roma all the way to Brownsville.”

Garcia said Glazer’s received 7,000 cases of Barrilito, more than 60% of which had been distributed as of Thursday.

“We wanted to push for a brand that was relevant to our market in the Rio Grande Valley specifically,” she said.

Barrilito is a Grupo Modelo product.

Garcia said 12-packs of the beer can be bought from local retailers for less than $10.

“It’s a light beer. It’s great. It’s a Mexican import, and it’s probably your cheapest Mexican import,” she said.

Cerveza Barrilito is also known for its bottle’s rounded shape.

The bottles kind of look like a barrel.

The ones sold in the Valley, however, will be cans, and Garcia said importing bottles isn’t a likelihood.

“Only because sourcing bottled products from Mexico is a lot more expensive,” she said. “And we want to just keep people in that price range — especially with the economy right now.”
