STHS Edinburg earns top Texas hospital ranking for fifth straight year

South Texas Health System Edinburg has once again earned a place among Texas’ top hospitals, becoming the only Rio Grande Valley hospital recognized as a Best Regional Hospital in Texas by U.S. News & World Report for the fifth consecutive year.  

The hospital ranked No. 30 in Texas in the publication’s 2026-2027 Best Regional Hospitals rankings, placing it among the top-performing facilities in the state for delivering complex medical care and positive patient outcomes. According to South Texas Health System, the hospital is one of just 16% of nearly 4,500 hospitals nationwide evaluated by U.S. News & World Report to receive a numerical ranking.  

The recognition comes as healthcare providers across the Rio Grande Valley continue expanding specialty care to meet the needs of the region’s growing population.

To earn Best Regional Hospital status, hospitals typically must demonstrate high performance across at least seven procedures and conditions measured by U.S. News & World Report. Rankings are based on objective measures including patient survival, nursing quality, patient experience and how effectively hospitals help patients recover after treatment.  

STHS Edinburg received high marks in nine procedures and conditions:

• Hip fracture care
• Pacemaker implantation
• Leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma treatment
• Heart failure
• Heart attack
• Diabetes
• Kidney failure
• Pneumonia
• Heart arrhythmia  

The rankings also reflect the broader South Texas Health System network. The evaluation incorporated performance data from STHS Edinburg, STHS McAllen, STHS Children’s, STHS Heart and STHS Behavioral.  

The latest recognition follows the hospital’s 2022 expansion, when STHS Edinburg opened a $104 million, five-story patient tower that doubled the facility’s size and expanded its capacity to serve patients across the region.

Ames said the recognition reinforces the system’s long-term investment in expanding advanced medical services in South Texas.
