Canadian coffee chain Tim Hortons is preparing to open a fifth store in Tamaulipas before the end of 2025, strengthening its footprint along the Mexican border.
The upcoming unit will be a container-format, drive-thru–only store at Reynosa’s San Fernando exit in Colonia Juárez. It follows the Aug. 16 opening of a fourth location inside Plaza Periférico on Libramiento Sur, a route that connects Reynosa to Monterrey. That store created 16 jobs.

“It has to open this year,” Eduardo Villarreal, assistant manager for Tim Hortons in Reynosa, said. “We have a lot of confidence in opening stores here.”
The chain’s growth in Reynosa has attracted a loyal following.
Regular customer Rosalina González said it’s become a popular meeting spot in the city.
“I mainly come for two reasons: the quality of the products and because they have Internet,” she said. “I really like the taste and the cleanliness of the place.”
Tim Hortons entered Reynosa in December 2023 with a $1 million investment that created 25 direct jobs. Today it operates four stores in Reynosa and one in Matamoros, with formats ranging from street-front to shopping-plaza and soon container-style drive-thrus.
The chain’s momentum mirrors other retail moves in the city. Walmart recently confirmed an $80 million investment for two new stores in Reynosa, marking its return a decade after its only site was destroyed in a fire in 2015.

“The city no longer depends solely on manufacturing; it’s diversifying with commerce, services, logistics and entrepreneurship,” said Mauricio Treviño Garza, the Reynosa Secretary of Economic Development.
Despite the rapid growth in Tamaulipas, Tim Hortons has yet to announce a single Rio Grande Valley location. According to the company website, they have nine Texas locations, most in Houston and surrounding cities and one in Austin.
