The Port of Harlingen is investing nearly $12.5 million in infrastructure improvements as it prepares for continued growth in manufacturing, international trade and cross-border logistics.

The projects include rehabilitation of the port’s main dock, navigation channel improvements, drainage upgrades, new solar-powered lighting, and long-term planning initiatives designed to expand capacity and improve operations, according to a news release from the Council for South Texas Economic Progress (COSTEP).

“These investments represent a long-term commitment to supporting regional economic development while ensuring the port can continue responding to the evolving needs of industry and global supply chains,” Port Director Walker Smith said.

One of the largest projects is the rehabilitation of the port’s 650-foot main dock, a key piece of infrastructure used for daily maritime operations.

The project will replace aging timber fender systems with newer, more durable technology designed to improve safety and accommodate increased vessel traffic.

The port is also upgrading mooring systems throughout its navigation channel to improve vessel handling and operational efficiency.

Beyond marine infrastructure, the port is investing in resiliency projects.

With funding from the Texas Department of Transportation, the port has installed 100 solar-powered lights and is making drainage improvements intended to better protect facilities during heavy rain and flooding.

Port officials are also developing a comprehensive asset management program and updating the port’s long-range master plan to help prioritize future infrastructure investments.

The investments come as industrial activity continues to expand across the Rio Grande Valley and northern Mexico, increasing demand for multimodal transportation and logistics facilities.

According to the port, cargo activity and business growth have accelerated in recent years. Since 2017, the Port of Harlingen has experienced more than 200% growth, driven by increased trade with Mexico and expanding industrial development throughout the region.

Smith said maintaining modern infrastructure will be critical as manufacturers and logistics providers continue looking for efficient transportation options in South Texas.

The Port of Harlingen serves as an inland port connected to the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway, providing barge, truck and rail access for industries across the Rio South Texas region.
