The city of Brownsville is banking on property developers to invest downtown if they have easy online access to available properties and historic tax credits.
So the Brownsville Community Improvement Corp. launched a public interactive map and a historic rehab tax credit brief to help developers identify buildings with existing historic designations, understand possible federal and Texas tax-credit pathways, and how to contact the appropriate agencies before work begins.
The map went live on Sept. 21 and identifies 306 historic sites as of Sept. 25.
The map includes 278 properties with a potential pathway for economic incentives through both federal and Texas programs, while 28 show a potential Texas-only pathway. Individuals can search by property name, address, or district, review the designation records behind each result, and follow links to official source material.
