EDINBURG — The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Monday celebrated receiving a $2.2 million grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture that will fund research into monitoring screwworms with imaging technology and drones.
The grant is part of about $105 million the USDA awarded in June through its New World Screwworm Grand Challenge, which funded research aimed at stopping the pest’s spread north.
UTRGV was one of 40 to receive the funds out of 226 applicants.
Traditionally, screwworm monitoring relies on seeing animal wounds firsthand or trapping flies.
