Cameron County has secured $1.2 million in state funding to expand a countywide flood monitoring and early warning system aimed at improving public safety during severe weather events.

On Monday, the Texas Water Development Board approved the grant funding through the state’s Flood Infrastructure Fund.

County leaders say the project will help emergency officials better track flooding conditions in real time and improve warning capabilities during storms.

“This investment represents a major step forward in protecting Cameron County residents from the dangers associated with severe weather and flooding events,” Cameron County Judge Eddie Treviño Jr. said in a news release Monday.

The project will include a total of 18 flood monitoring stations across Cameron County.

Eight stations have already been installed and will now be fully activated and connected into the system. Another 10 monitoring stations will be added to expand flood tracking coverage throughout the county.

County officials said the system is designed to provide faster and more accurate flood information during severe weather events.

“Flooding continues to be one of the most significant natural threats facing our region, and this funding will help provide real-time information and early warnings that can save lives, protect property, and improve emergency response efforts throughout the County,” Treviño said.

County Commissioner David Garza said the project improves preparedness across the region.

“This approval represents another important step in advancing critical flood planning and resilience efforts for our region,” Garza said in the release.
