Entrepreneurs and early-stage startups have a chance to compete for $65,000 in grant funding through the 2026 RISE Up Harlingen Business Pitch Competition.

The annual program, organized by the Harlingen Economic Development Corporation in partnership with the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Entrepreneurship and Commercialization Center, combines business training, mentorship and networking opportunities with a live pitch competition scheduled for Oct. 1.

The competition will award $30,000 for first place, $20,000 for second place and $15,000 for third place.

Applications are currently being accepted and will close on July 6.

Harlingen EDC officials said the initiative is designed to help entrepreneurs move business ideas from concept to commercialization while strengthening the city’s startup ecosystem.

“RISE Up Harlingen continues to spark real momentum for local entrepreneurs, and we’re excited to bring it back for its third year,” Orlando Campos, CEO of the Harlingen EDC, said in a statement. “Through this competition, we’re seeing ideas move from concept to company, while also building a stronger, more dynamic innovation ecosystem in Harlingen.”

The competition is powered by the AdvanceUp Accelerator course, which participants must complete before becoming eligible to pitch.

The Harlingen EDC will select 10 applicants for the program. Eligible businesses must commit to establishing or maintaining operations within the city of Harlingen.

The accelerator begins July 20 and will meet weekly on Mondays through Sept. 28. Participants will receive mentorship, business development support and opportunities to connect with local business leaders and potential partners before presenting their business concepts to a panel of judges.

The competition comes as economic development organizations across the Rio Grande Valley place increased emphasis on entrepreneurship and small-business development as part of broader economic diversification strategies.

In addition to recruiting large employers and industrial projects, local economic development corporations have expanded efforts to support homegrown companies and startups that can create jobs and generate long-term economic activity.

Sponsorship opportunities are also available for businesses interested in supporting the program. According to organizers, all sponsorship contributions are directed toward prize funding for participating entrepreneurs.

Additional information and application materials are available through the Harlingen Economic Development Corporation. For more information, contact the Harlingen EDC’s Small Business & Startup Manager, Maria Escobar, at 956-966-2692 or mescobar@harlingenedc.com.
