South Padre Island leaders are exploring paid parking for beach visitors. Here’s what you need to know

The concept of converting free public parking lots to paid spots across South Padre Island has been explored for the past decade, but a year-long consultant study recently released suggests the city is leaving money on the table from millions of visitors who trek to the beach each year.

The Grand Rapids, Michigan-based consultant Fishbeck presented options to the South Padre Island City Council in early October ranging from a surface parking lot, a garage, or adding public parking spaces with curbs in front of private homes or along the busy thoroughfare.

“You are losing money on parking every year by turning on the [street] lights, picking up the trash,” Jon Forster, a consultant with Fishbeck, said. “Parking does not have to make money, but you do want to be informed on what you have.”

Texas law requires any cities that ban driving on the beach to offer one public parking spot for every 15 feet of shoreline. That means South Padre Island is roughly 300 parking spaces short, but it routinely adds parking spots each year. Outside of city limits in Cameron County, vehicles are permitted on the beach and bay, but not the dunes.
