Texas LNG seeks 5 more years but remains bullish on Port of Brownsville export project

About 11 years ago, the company behind a liquefied natural gas export terminal at the Port of Brownsville sought federal approvals for a project it still has not built.

LNG, or liquefied natural gas, is a supercooled product often exported overseas as an alternative energy source to nations without domestic energy extraction industries, such as many European and Asian countries.

One of the company’s federal authorizations is now set to expire, so it filed for a five-year extension, giving it more time to build the 4 million metric ton export facility slated to sell LNG from South Texas to countries worldwide that do not have free trade agreements with the U.S., such as Europe and Japan.

Texas LNG Brownsville LLC filed for the extension through the U.S. Department of Energy, requesting five more years, which would push back its deadline to begin operations from February 2027 to February 2032. The company doesn’t expect to change the scope of its plans, according to the filing.
