DHR Health in Edinburg has become the first and only nationally accredited comprehensive epilepsy center south of San Antonio, giving Rio Grande Valley patients with severe epilepsy access to advanced treatment closer to home.

The designation follows accreditation from the National Association of Epilepsy Centers, the highest level of accreditation available for epilepsy care in the United States.

“The achievement is not only a milestone for DHR Health but for the entire South Texas community,” Dr. Leonel Estofan, a DHR Health neurologist specializing in epilepsy, said in a news release Tuesday.

The center offers access to advanced testing, brain monitoring, surgical treatment options, and long-term support services for patients with severe or drug-resistant epilepsy, a neurological disorder that causes recurring seizures.

“It reflects our mission to deliver exceptional, patient-centered care and to lead with innovation and clinical excellence,” Estofan said.

DHR Health said its epilepsy center includes the region’s only epilepsy surgical program using the ROSA robotic system and the only ABRET-certified EEG laboratory in South Texas.

“Joining the elite ranks of NAEC-accredited centers confirms that our surgical staffing, technology, and clinical outcomes meet the highest standards of excellence in the nation and further ensures that patients with complex, drug-resistant epilepsy do not need to travel out of the area for world-class neurosurgical care,” Dr. Juan Torres-Reveron, a DHR Health neurosurgeon specializing in epilepsy surgery, said in the release.

The designation adds to DHR Health’s broader push to expand specialty healthcare services and advanced medical programs across the Rio Grande Valley.
