McAllen airport lands $7M federal grant for terminal expansion

McAllen International Airport has secured $7 million in federal funding to support continued passenger terminal expansion efforts as airport traffic and air service opportunities continue growing across the Rio Grande Valley.  

The funding comes through the Federal Aviation Administration’s Airport Terminal Program under the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act and will help improve terminal capacity, modernize infrastructure and enhance the passenger experience, airport officials announced Wednesday.  

“Thank you to our federal partners and elected officials for their continued support of McAllen International Airport and the important role it plays in connecting our community, region, and international travelers,” McAllen Mayor Javier Villalobos said in a news release Wednesday. “With millions of passengers moving through our terminal annually, MFE serves a diverse audience that includes leisure travelers, business professionals, and binational visitors who contribute to the economic vitality of South Texas.”  

The airport serves more than 1.1 million passengers annually and has positioned itself as a key transportation asset tied to commerce, tourism and binational connectivity in South Texas. Airport officials said the investment is intended to help prepare the facility for future passenger growth and additional air service opportunities.  

“As passenger traffic and air service opportunities continue to grow, investments like this are critical to ensuring our airport is prepared to meet the future needs of both travelers and our region,” McAllen City Manager Isaac J. Tawil said in the release. “McAllen International Airport is more than a transportation facility, it is a vital gateway for commerce, tourism, and regional connectivity.”  

Airport Director Jeremy Santoscoy said the project represents a long-term investment in airport infrastructure as passenger volumes continue climbing.

“McAllen International Airport’s significant growth, and this funding represents an important investment in the future of our airport,” Santoscoy said. “We appreciate the support through the Airport Terminal Program and remain committed to delivering infrastructure improvements that enhance safety, efficiency, and customer service for the more than 1.1 million passengers we serve annually.”  

McAllen International Airport currently offers nonstop service through American Airlines, United Airlines, Allegiant Air, Delta Air Lines and Aerus, connecting the Rio Grande Valley to destinations including Dallas, Houston, Orlando, Las Vegas, Austin, Phoenix and Monterrey.
