Breaking news: Reynosa economic development secretary dies after car crash

Mauricio Treviño Garza, the secretary of economic development and employment for the city of Reynosa, died Monday following a car crash in San Fernando, Tamaulipas.

The Civil Protection and Fire Department of San Fernando, Tamaulipas, confirmed the death.

The crash happened shortly before 3 p.m. at kilometer 162 on the Ciudad Victoria–Matamoros federal highway, where it meets the heavily traveled San Fernando bypass.

Treviño led the municipal agency responsible for business recruitment, workforce development, and industrial coordination in one of Mexico’s largest border manufacturing hubs.

Reynosa Mayor Carlos Peña Ortiz lamented Treviño’s death via a social media post.

“His departure leaves a great void among those of us who had the opportunity to know him, work alongside him, and appreciate his commitment, his humanity, and his love for Reynosa,” the mayor said.

Treviño held a degree in public policy, with academic training in government analysis and economic development.

Throughout his career, he served in federal roles tied to Mexico’s Ministry of Economy, where he coordinated government efforts and tracked economic legislation.
