Construction is getting underway on Saronic Technologies’ $3.2 billion Port Alpha shipyard at the Port of Brownsville, with the first work focused on preparing the sprawling site for manufacturing and building the infrastructure needed to launch vessel production.

JE Dunn Construction and Alberici Constructors are leading construction of the initial phases of the project, which broke ground last week on an 835-acre site. The companies said Wednesday that early work includes grading, ground improvements, drainage, access roads and utility infrastructure.

That work will be followed by construction of Port Alpha’s first assembly buildings, along with material-handling systems, utilities and other supporting facilities.

The first phase is ultimately expected to include manufacturing facilities, warehouses, permanent waterfront and vessel-launching infrastructure and facilities for employees, according to the companies.
