Tamaulipas is stepping up efforts to control New World screwworm infections in livestock as the state works to maintain the animal health requirements needed to resume cattle exports to the United States.
The Mexican border state had 81 active screwworm cases and 1,468 cumulative cases as of Oct. 15, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service.
Across Mexico, federal data showed 1,973 active cases and 47,425 cumulative cases.

Ricardo De Anda de la Cruz, who participates in animal health campaigns for the Tamaulipas Secretariat of Rural Development, Fisheries and Aquaculture, said recent rainfall and cooler temperatures have created favorable conditions for the flies responsible for the infections.
