The total cost for homebuyer hopefuls to take out a 30-year mortgage increased over the past year through August 2026 but the housing market across the two largest Rio Grande Valley metro areas went in opposite directions.
Interest rates for 30-year mortgages were up from roughly 6.41% in August 2025 to 6.72% in August 2026.
Home sales across the McAllen-Edinburg-Mission metro steadily increased while the Brownsville-Harlingen metro area saw a decline through August over the year.
In the Brownsville-Harlingen market, sales were down by 17% and appeared to drop back to levels last seen in August 2019.
