Progreso International Bridge to break ground on $8M truck-inspection project as commercial traffic grows

The Progreso International Bridge is advancing a new phase of commercial growth in the Mid-Valley, as officials prepare to break ground next month on an $8 million U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) truck-inspection facility that will expand federal oversight of northbound commercial vehicles.

Bridge consultant Ernesto Silva said the DOT inspection area will provide a dedicated site for northbound truck inspections, adding federal capacity to meet rising commercial traffic. Construction is expected to last about eight months.

The project follows the Las Flores commercial development, completed in March 2023, which shifted cargo inspections outside downtown Nuevo Progreso, Mexico, Silva said the relocation streamlined traffic and strengthened the bridge’s role as a logistics hub for central Hidalgo County.

“We moved inspections outside the urban area so trucks are no longer passing through downtown,” Silva said.
