New Border Patrol checkpoints in Starr County raise questions for cross-border trade​

U.S. Customs and Border Protection confirmed Monday it is establishing two new U.S. Border Patrol interior checkpoints in Starr County, but the agency did not say how the deployments could affect freight movement or a planned 17-mile regional transportation project intended to help cargo trucks move north more efficiently.

The checkpoints will be located in the Roma area and are part of ongoing border security operations, an agency spokesperson said in a written statement to the Rio Grande Valley Business Journal. The statement was initially released to ValleyCentral.

The agency did not provide a timeline or specific site locations.

CBP also declined to say whether commercial vehicles will face additional screening or potential delays.

For Starr County — where transportation infrastructure and freight movement are already a major focus — the lack of detail is notable.

The county has been preparing for the construction of State Loop 195, a 17-mile, four-lane highway meant to serve as a relief route from U.S. Highway 83.

The project is intended to divert heavy trucks away from congested urban segments of U.S. 83 and toward routes away from local population centers.

That roadway, which is planned and under construction in phases, is seen as a boon for logistics and cross-border commerce — but federal officials have not said whether the new Border Patrol checkpoints could intersect with or influence traffic patterns related to the loop.
