There’s a new leader of a key board that helps shape long-term water policy in the Rio Grande Valley and several other Texas-Mexico border counties in South Texas.

Anthony Stambaugh, general manager of Hidalgo County Irrigation District No. 2 was elected chair of the Rio Grande Valley Regional Water Planning Group on Wednesday.
And it’s a very important time, because the board is evaluating the new supply and demand reality right now to update the Texas Water Development Board’s Region M plan — which covers Hidalgo, Cameron, Willacy, Starr, Jim Hogg, Maverick, Webb and Zapata counties.

That means it includes regional water resource planning for the metro areas of McAllen-Edinburg-Mission, Brownsville-Harlingen, Laredo, Eagle Pass and Zapata in addition to many more very rural communities.
