Cameron County has completed a nearly $6.9 million renovation of Andy Bowie Park, adding new beach amenities, upgraded facilities and improved public access through a project funded in part by a $2 million contribution from SpaceX.

County officials marked the completion of the project with a ribbon-cutting ceremony June 26 at Beach Access No. 2 on South Padre Island. The improvements are part of Cameron County’s ongoing investment in its coastal park system, which County Judge Eddie Treviño Jr. said has totaled about $51 million since 2017.

The renovation modernized one of South Padre Island’s busiest public beach parks, replacing aging infrastructure first built in 1994 while improving accessibility and safety for residents and visitors.

Among the upgrades are new elevated plaza pavilions on the north and south ends of the park, additional picnic areas, environmentally friendly lighting, renovated restroom and bathhouse facilities, updated concession buildings and improvements to the park office.

The project also included enhancements to the Park Ranger Station, new landscaping designed to complement the surrounding dune environment, a resurfaced parking lot built to better withstand coastal conditions, and a new pedestrian beach access walkway with rinse stations on the park’s south end.

Funding for the project came from multiple sources, including approximately $4.2 million through the American Rescue Plan Act, $2 million from SpaceX and about $662,000 in Cameron County Certificates of Obligation.

“These much-needed improvements to aging infrastructure come at an ideal time as we welcome residents and visitors to our beaches during the busy summer season,” Treviño said in a statement. “I’m proud of the approximately $51 million investment that Commissioners’ Court has made in our coastal parks on South Padre Island since 2017 to ensure that residents and visitors alike can fully enjoy the best beaches in Texas.”

County Commissioner Sofia C. Benavides said the improvements will help preserve one of the county’s most heavily used beach destinations.

“The original Andy Bowie Park pavilion and amenities have served the public well since the park’s construction in 1994,” Benavides said. “As one of our most popular beach access areas, these upgrades will provide lasting benefits for generations to come and the thousands of beachgoers who visit Andy Bowie annually.”

The project also represents part of SpaceX’s broader investment in public amenities across Cameron County.

According to the Starbase community newsletter, the Andy Bowie Park renovation is included in SpaceX’s $15 million commitment to Cameron County for projects aimed at improving public beach access, recreational and educational opportunities, and park amenities throughout the region.

“As a proud member of the Cameron County community, SpaceX is excited to see these improvements to Andy Bowie Park become a place where families can gather, create memories, and enjoy our beautiful coastline for years to come,” Marisela Cortez, SpaceX external affairs manager, said in a statement. “Projects like this are possible through strong partnerships and shared vision for the future. We are grateful to be a part of the effort that enhances public spaces and delivers lasting benefits to both residents and visitors of the Rio Grande Valley.”

Although the ribbon cutting marked the project’s completion, Cameron County said contractors would continue working through a final punch list before the park fully reopens to the public.

The project team included Gomez, Mendez, Saenz Inc. as architect, RRP Consulting Engineers, Green, Rubiano & Associates Inc. as structural engineer, and A&I Custom Manufacturing LLC as general contractor.
