Edinburg backs small businesses with $400K in upgrade grants

The Edinburg Economic Development Corporation is investing $400,000 to help local businesses upgrade storefronts and commercial properties through a new round of façade grants.

Applications for the third round of the Façade and Lot Improvement Program, or FLIP, are currently being accepted, with funding available for at least 40 qualifying businesses.

The program offers up to $10,000 per business and reimburses costs tied to exterior improvements, including façade upgrades, signage, parking lot repairs, landscaping, and structural updates such as doors, windows, and awnings.

“The FLIP program has proven to be a valuable tool in helping our local small businesses invest in their properties and improve the overall look and feel of our commercial areas,” said Raudel Garza, executive director of the Edinburg Economic Development Corporation. “By bringing this program back for a third round, we are continuing to support our entrepreneurs while encouraging reinvestment in our community.”

Who qualifies

Eligible applicants must be locally owned businesses operating within Edinburg city limits with fewer than 20 employees.

Businesses must be current on property taxes and have no outstanding code enforcement violations or liens.

Both property owners and tenants may apply. Tenants must provide written authorization from the property owner.

Businesses that received funding in previous rounds are not eligible for this cycle.

How the funding works

The program operates on a reimbursement basis. Funds are issued after projects are completed and verified.

Expenses incurred before approval or without required permits are not eligible.

Applicants must submit at least two quotes for proposed work, including one from an Edinburg-based contractor, vendor, or business.

All projects must be approved by the EEDC Board of Directors and the Edinburg City Council before work begins.

Focus on reinvestment

City leaders say the program is designed to drive reinvestment in commercial corridors while helping businesses improve curb appeal and attract customers.

Eligible improvements include exterior painting, façade restoration, patio construction, permanent landscaping, roof repairs tied to existing structures, and signage replacement.

Applications submitted online close April 23, and in-person submissions will be accepted until April 24.
