Brownsville City Hall to undergo 16-month modernization project

Brownsville City Hall is set to undergo a major modernization project that will upgrade the building’s heating, ventilation and air conditioning system, electrical service and network infrastructure over a 16-month period beginning later this year.

The city plans to complete the renovations one floor at a time to minimize disruptions to employees and residents. During construction, affected departments will temporarily relocate to the former Cummings Middle School campus while continuing to provide public services.

Construction is scheduled to begin on the building’s fifth floor in December before moving through each level. The final phase, involving the first floor, is expected to be completed in March 2028.

The renovation schedule calls for work on the fifth floor from December 2026 through March 2027, followed by the fourth floor from March through June 2027, where the Office of Organizational Development and Human Resources is located.

Construction on the second floor, which houses the City Manager’s Office and Legal Department, is scheduled for May through August 2027. Renovations will then move to the Finance Department on the third floor from August through November 2027.

The final phase, from November 2027 through March 2028, will include the first floor, home to the Procurement Department, the United States Postal Service and the Brownsville City Employees Credit Union.

City officials said advance notice will be provided before each phase begins, including information on temporary office locations, public access and any operational changes.

Project updates, relocation information and construction timelines will be shared through the city’s communication channels as work progresses.

According to the city, the modernization project is intended to improve operational efficiency, replace aging building systems and ensure City Hall continues serving employees and residents for years to come.
