San Antonio-based H-E-B Grocery Co. is cutting out the insurance middleman and selling direct access to a primary care doctor, prescriptions, physical therapy, and dietitian services through its wellness clinic model.

H-E-B ’s first clinic, which opened in 2022 and was previously known as Magenta Health Clinics, was modeled after its internal employee medical clinic program.

Now H-E-B operates more than a dozen clinics across Texas, including San Antonio, Austin, Houston, and Corpus Christi.

Its first wellness clinic in the Rio Grande Valley will be in Harlingen, across from the Valle Vista Mall along Interstate 69.

That’s where the company posted job openings for a physician, a nurse practitioner, and a physical therapist in recent weeks. The healthcare providers would be employees of H-E-B, according to the job posting.

H-E-B confirmed to the Rio Grande Valley Business Journal that it expects to open an H-E-B Wellness Primary Care clinic in Harlingen later this year.

It also offers wellness nutrition services in Edinburg and McAllen, but does not have any clinics there.

H-E-B Grocery previously planned to build its first wellness clinic at its Shary Road store, which features several other retailers inside, including a popcorn maker, a car insurance company, a jewelry store, and a nail salon. It was expected to open in mid-2025, according to state construction records, but never did. Instead, there’s a Spectrum store at that location.

H-E-B’s business model is for the clinics to serve patients 12 years old and up and charge a monthly subscription fee between $99 and $119, which covers primary care doctor visits, vaccines, lab testing, and support for chronic illnesses. The higher-tier membership includes physical therapy, mental health counseling, and dietitian visits.

“We believe that food plays an integral role in wellbeing, and as one of the largest sellers of food in the state of Texas, we’re committed to making it easy for Texans to live better and healthier,” H-E-B President Craig Boyan said in a news release when the first clinic opened.

H-E-B also sells its primary care clinic model access directly to businesses for their employees as an insurance alternative.
