T-Mobile is looking to expand its high-speed internet service in Mercedes through a new underground fiber-optic network that could give residents another option for home internet.
The telecommunications company has applied for a permit with the city to install fiber-optic cables throughout Mercedes, according to City Commissioner Ruben J. Saldaña.
In a Facebook post, Saldaña said residents may have already noticed crews working around town with equipment used for horizontal directional drilling, a construction method that allows underground cables to be installed with limited disruption to streets and other surfaces.
The project involves two types of conduit, or protective tubing, that serve different purposes. One carries the main distribution lines, while the other connects the network to individual homes, Saldaña explained.
