Fluidstack has begun construction on the first $4 billion phase of its massive artificial intelligence data center campus in Cameron County, moving forward with a project that has drawn scrutiny over its potential demands on the region’s power, water and infrastructure.
The company announced Thursday that construction has started on the more than 1,100-acre site east of Valley International Airport and west of the Port of Harlingen, near Rio Hondo. Fluidstack said the first phase is expected to create more than 2,500 construction jobs and several hundred permanent jobs.
The announcement comes after Fluidstack recently offered $27 million toward infrastructure and drainage improvements in Harlingen as local officials raised questions about the sprawling project’s potential impact on water, electricity and surrounding communities.
